General laptop battery care tips:
New laptop batteries are in a discharged state and must be charged before
use. Upon initial use fully charge and discharge the laptop battery two
to three times in order to achieve maximum battery capacity.
If laptop batteries are not going to be used for more than a month,
they should be removed from the laptop and stored in a cool, dry, clean
place.
If a laptop battery has not been used for a long period of time, perform
the new battery break-in procedure described above
Clean dirty laptop battery contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol.
This helps maintain a good connection between the battery and laptop.
Take care not to carry a laptop battery in a bag with metal objects
in it. This may short circuit the laptop battery and damage it.
If you drop a laptop battery it may damage one of the internal cells
and the battery may stop working. Also if there are any cracks on the
plastic casing, any damage on the metallic contacts, or any signs of leakage
it could be dangerous to continue using the damaged battery.
Laptop battery care tips to increase battery lifespan:
If possible run the laptop from the AC power adaptor instead of using
the laptop battery. This is by far the best thing you can do to extend
the lifespan of laptop batteries. The more you use the laptop battery
the quicker it will need to be replaced.
Its not a well known laptop battery care tip, but even when your laptop
is plugged into an AC adaptor and your laptop battery is fully charged,
the laptop will still use the laptop battery resources in small amounts,
putting unnecessary charge cycles on your battery. If possible detach
your laptop battery from the laptop altogether when plugged into the mains.
Laptop batteries should be fully drained and recharged every couple
of months. However caring for laptop batteries in this way is not necessary
with Li-Ion laptop batteries since they do not suffer from the memory
effect.
When a laptop battery is removed and stored for a while it should contain
at least 40 - 50% of its power. Take care not to fully charge or discharge
a laptop battery before storage.
