1990's the usefulness and popularity of laptops increased dramtically and
one of the key reasons was a vast improvement in laptop battery technology.
Heavy lead-acid batteries were replaced with lighter and more efficient
technologies, first came nickel cadmium (NiCd) laptop batteries, then nickel
metal hydride (NiMH) laptop batteries, and then lithium ion (Li-Ion) laptop
batteries. The latest laptop battery to be developed is the Lithium ion
polymer (LiPo) battery and its currently the best laptop battery you can
buy. We can still expect major improvements in battery technology in the
next 15 years however, especially since battery researchers now have a new
impetus in the form of electric and hybrid cars that require vast amounts
of energy to be stored in as light a battery as possible.The lithium ion polymer laptop battery is a great battery - its energy density is over 20% higher than that of a classic Li-ion battery, but there are still major improvements to be made. One of the main problems (which is kept very quiet by manufacturers) is that todays laptop batteries are not designed to survive for the expected lifetime of a laptop. Indeed laptop batteries may only last as little as one year before they no longer hold a useful quantity of charge and need to be replaced. Researchers are currently making advances towards creating a laptop battery that can be utilized for the entire lifetime of a laptop.
